Layers under your feet

A carpeted floor is several layers: the face fibers you walk on, the backing that holds them, a foam or rebond pad, and the plywood or concrete underneath. Spilled drinks, vomit and heavy smoke residue can soak through the fibers into the pad, and liquids can reach the subfloor. A standard hot-water extraction cleans the face fibers well. It does far less for a pad that has absorbed a spill, and the water it adds can wake up an old smell that had gone quiet.

That is why a room can smell great the afternoon after a carpet cleaning and sour two days later. As the pad dries, odor moves back up into the fibers. In LoHi's newer condos and townhomes, bedrooms are often carpeted over concrete or wood subfloor while living areas are hard floors, so the bedrooms are usually where this shows up.

Smoke odor is a different case. It sits on every surface in the room: walls, ceiling, blinds, curtains and bedding as well as the carpet. Cleaning only the carpet leaves most of the residue behind.

When a carpet clean is the right call

Carpet cleaning likely enough

  • Dirt, foot traffic and general mustiness
  • A spill caught and blotted within hours
  • Light cooking odor in a living area
  • Smell strongest at the carpet surface only

Look beyond the carpet

  • Old or large spills that soaked in
  • A smell that returns as the carpet dries
  • Cigarette smoke throughout the room
  • Staining on the back of the carpet or the pad

Checking before you book

  1. Find the footprint.Get down and smell the carpet in several spots, then the walls, curtains and mattress. If the walls smell as strong as the floor, the carpet is not the main source.
  2. Lift a corner if you can.In a closet or along a wall, gently lift the carpet edge and look at the pad. Dark staining or a strong smell under the carpet means the pad is involved.
  3. Ask the cleaner what they will do.Ask whether they treat the pad, use enzyme products for organic spills, and how long drying takes. Make sure drying fits before your next check-in.
  4. Recheck when dry.Smell the room after the carpet is fully dry, with the room closed up for an hour, not while it is still damp and smelling of cleaner.

Common questions

Do carpet deodorizer powders help?

They cover the smell for a while and can leave residue in the carpet. They do not remove what is soaked into the pad.
