Sort before you wash
Washing everything together on hot is the instinct, and it is how curtains shrink and wool throws felt. Each item has a care label that limits what can be done, and the type of odor matters too. Smoke residue needs detergent and sometimes repeated washing; mustiness needs thorough drying; food and spills need prompt washing before they set.
Sort items into three piles at the start of the turnover: wash here, send out, and replace. Bag each pile separately so smelly items do not transfer odor to clean ones.
Wash, send out or replace
- IfThe label allows machine washing and the item fits your machineThenWash in the unit with a good detergent; wash twice for smoke if needed and smell before drying.
- IfThe label says dry clean, or the item is large like a heavy curtain or rugThenSend out to a cleaner and mention the type of odor.
- IfFoam pillows, inexpensive throws or items that still smell after two washesThenReplacing is often cheaper than repeated cleaning.
- IfUpholstered furniture or a mattressThenUse a professional upholstery cleaner; protect mattresses with washable encasements in future.

Common questions
Does adding vinegar or baking soda help smoke smell in laundry?
Some people find it helps as a rinse additive, but detergent and repeat washing do most of the work. Check the label and never mix vinegar with bleach.
How many sets of linens should a rental have?
At least three per bed is common: one on the bed, one in the wash and one spare. Odor problems are much easier to handle when there is a clean set ready.
What if an item is damaged in the wash?
Note it on the turnover report and replace it before the next stay. Following care labels prevents most of these losses.
Should smoky items be washed with the regular linens?
No. Wash them separately so smoke residue does not transfer to clean sheets and towels, and clean the washer drum afterward if the smell was strong.
