Guests on longer stays cook more, and visitors who choose a short-term rental over a hotel often do so precisely because they want a kitchen. That is good for bookings and hard on the unit. Cooking odor is carried on tiny droplets of grease and smoke. Those droplets settle on the coolest, least-cleaned surfaces nearby and keep releasing odor for weeks.

Many newer LoHi condos and townhomes have open kitchens that flow straight into the living area, with a microwave hood or slim range hood that filters and recirculates air instead of venting outside. In that layout, the sofa ten feet away is effectively part of the kitchen for odor purposes.

Is it a cleaning task or something more?

  • IfThe smell is strongest right at the stove and fades across the roomThenFocus on the hood filters, cabinet tops and oven. A detailed kitchen clean is usually enough.
  • IfThe sofa and curtains smell like the kitchen even after the kitchen is cleanThenThe fabric has absorbed it. Plan upholstery and curtain cleaning, which may need a day to dry.
  • IfOdor returns within a day or two of each deep cleanThenLook for a hidden source such as a loaded hood filter, a food spill behind the range, or a drain issue.
  • IfA guest reports a burnt smell after a cooking accidentThenTreat it like light smoke: pull soft goods, clean surfaces from the top down and check whether a provider should assess it.

Habits that slow the buildup

Small changes to the listing and the turnover routine help more than a big clean twice a year.

  • Add a line to the house manual asking guests to run the range hood whenever they cook
  • Leave a short note on the hood if it recirculates rather than vents, so guests open a window too
  • Add hood filter inspection to the cleaner's checklist every few stays
  • Use washable slipcovers on the sofa nearest the kitchen
  • Keep a spare set of curtain panels so one can be laundered while the other hangs
