The film you cannot always see

Cigarette smoke leaves tar and nicotine residue that settles on cool surfaces and sticks. It builds up most on the ceiling above where the person sat, on window glass and blinds, light fixtures and lampshades, the tops of door frames, and on painted walls near the source. Cannabis smoke leaves a lighter, oily residue in the same places. On white surfaces it may show as a faint yellow tint; often it is invisible until you wipe it.

The residue keeps releasing odor, especially as rooms warm up. Wiping it off is what makes the smell stop coming back. Painted walls in many LoHi rentals are flat or eggshell finishes that can shine or wear through if scrubbed hard, so the method matters.

Cleaning order

  1. Remove soft goods first.Bag bedding, curtains, pillows and throws so they do not pick up residue during cleaning.
  2. Start at the ceiling.Work from the ceiling down so drips land on surfaces you have not cleaned yet.
  3. Use plenty of cloths.Switch to a clean cloth or rinse often. A dirty cloth just spreads the film.
  4. Rinse.Wipe with clean water after the cleaner to remove leftover residue and product.
  5. Recheck when dry.Close the room up and smell it again once surfaces are dry.

Often missed

  • Tops of door frames, cabinets and the fridge.
  • Outlet covers and light switch plates.
  • Air return grilles and supply registers.
  • The inside of closet doors.
  • Ceiling fan blades.

Common questions

When is repainting needed?

If cleaning does not remove the smell or staining after heavy, long-term smoking, an odor-blocking primer followed by paint is the usual next step.

Is a magic eraser safe on smoky walls?

Melamine sponges are abrasive and can dull or remove flat paint. Test on a hidden spot, use light pressure, and prefer a soft cloth and a mild degreaser first.

How do I know the residue is gone?

A clean white cloth wiped across the surface comes away without a yellow tint, and the room no longer smells after being closed up warm.
